Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. But patients frequently ask: "Why do my veins look worse before they look better?" The answer is completely normal — and understanding the healing process will help you feel confident and patient throughout your recovery.

Your Healing Timeline

Day 1

Immediately After Treatment

Right after sclerotherapy, treated veins may appear more red or raised than before. This is completely normal — it means the sclerosing solution is doing its job, creating a controlled inflammatory response that will close the vessel. Compression stockings are applied immediately and should be worn as directed by Dr. Abdullah.

Wks 1–2

Early Healing

You may notice some bruising, mild swelling, or dark discoloration along the treated veins. This is part of the normal inflammatory response and will resolve on its own. Most patients resume normal daily activities right away — walking is actively encouraged to promote healthy circulation and support the healing process.

Wks 3–6

Visible Improvement

Treated veins begin to fade noticeably as the body absorbs the closed vessel tissue. Visible improvement should be apparent by the end of this period, and most patients feel encouraged by what they see. The skin typically becomes clearer and smoother week by week.

Full Results

Full results are typically visible at around three months. Treated veins have been fully absorbed by the body, leaving clearer, smoother skin. A follow-up visit with Dr. Abdullah will assess your results and determine whether any additional sessions would be beneficial.

Tips for the Best Outcome

  • Wear your compression stockings exactly as directed — this is the single most important post-procedure instruction
  • Walk daily to promote healthy circulation in the treated legs
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 48–72 hours after treatment
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure on treated areas while healing
  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, or hot tubs for the first 48 hours
  • Do not scratch or massage the treated areas
